Barclays Asia-Pac research head given global gig

The retirement of Larry Kantor triggers the promotion of Asia research head Jon Scoffin to global fixed income and equity research co-head, together with Jeff Meli.

Jon Scoffin and Jeff Meli have been named co-heads of global research at Barclays following the retirement of Larry Kantor, according to an internal memo seen by FinanceAsia.

Scoffin, who joined Barclays in 1998, is based in London.

In the memo Tom King, chief executive of Barclay's investment bank, credited Scoffin with building Barclays as a leader in fixed income, currency and commodities (FICC) research, while enhancing the bank's regional equity research capabilities.

A source with the bank told FinanceAsia that Scoffin's Asia experience -- he served as head of research Asia Pacific since 2006 from his base in Singapore -- will play well with global institutional investors. "Having somebody like Jon with so many years of Asia experience across different asset classes in a leading research role underlines the importance Barclays places in servicing this client requirement," the source said.

Meli joined Barclays in 2005 as head of US credit strategy research and was co-head of FICC research prior to his latest promotion.

Both Scoffin and Meli will report to King.

In addition King said that a new macro research position has been created with Ajay Rajadhyaksha, also a former co-head of FICC research, serving as its head.

Rajadhyaksha will report to both Meli and Scoffin. He will be responsible for Global Outlook, the bank's flagship research product. He established a name for himself through his coverage of the rates and securitised products markets. His work in this area led to his 2014 appointment to the Treasury Borrowing Advisory Committee, which presents views on the global economy and debt management to the US Treasury and the rates-setting Federal Open Market Committee.
