Nomura has appointed Mei-Yu Shih as head of equity sales and trading for Taiwan, the latest recruit brought to the Japanese bank from Bank of America Merrill Lynch.

Shih, who will be based in Taipei, worked at the US bank for 12 years, most recently as head of Taiwan equity sales, a position she held since 2008.

The Japanese bank, this year celebrating its 20th anniversary in Taiwan, said Shih would focus on expanding the breadth and depth of its relationships with top tier global and local investors.

Nomura’s appointment comes at a sensitive time for the local stock market.

The Taiwan Stock Exchange is up about 8 per cent this year but volumes have been sluggish due in part to fears of US tapering, prompting the government to announce measures this week to spur activity.

Taipei introduced a three-pronged stimulus program, to be phased in through to early next year, aimed at increasing activity, which include allowing day trading and easing restrictions on shorting stocks.

Meanwhile, Nomura has been busy recruiting former BofA Merrill staff to key positions this year. In August, the Japanese bank announced two hires for its regional equities and equity derivatives teams outside Japan.

Stanley Wong joined as head of North Asia equity distribution, in charge of equity sales in Hong Kong, China, Taiwan and Korea. He is based in Hong Kong. Ajay Gupta also joined as head of client trading for Asia ex-Japan.

Nomura this year also hired Laurent Poirot as head of flow index and delta one for Asia ex-Japan, and Vincent Yam as head of Greater China trading with responsibility for flow SS options, warrants and Hong Kong and China cash trading.

Jae Lee was also recruited from the US bank, becoming Nomura’s head of equity structuring for Asia ex-Japan. He is based in Hong Kong.
