Latham & Watkins hires Goldman's Du Yilong

The US law firm has hired capital markets lawyer Du Yilong, a former executive director with Goldman Sachs.

Du Yilong has joined Latham & Watkins as a partner in Hong Kong where he will work on Chinese companies' equity deals among other matters, according to a statement by the firm on Monday.

Du joined the US law firm this month after serving as an executive director and senior counsel at Goldman Sachs in Hong Kong and Beijing, Latham told FinanceAsia.

Du has has worked on equity capital markets transactions and mergers and acquisitions in mainland China, Hong Kong and the US.

He has advised China's large state-owned enterprises and major private companies, providing legal support for Goldman's investment banking transactions "including US-registered and HK-listed IPOs, bond and other equity offerings and cross-border and domestic M&A," the statement said.

Du has a particularly good grasp of Hong Kong listing rules and SFC regulations and has experience advising on securities regulations and general company representation matters, according to the statement.

In addition to his market acumen, the firm is keen to lever his network of China contacts. Simon Powell, office managing partner of Latham & Watkins in Hong Kong, acknowledged as much when he called Du a "...strong leader and practice builder whose deep connections throughout the PRC will be an asset for our clients".

Du received his Juris Doctor degree from Columbia Law School, where he was a Harlan Fiske Stone scholar. He was awarded a Master of Laws with distinction from Beijing University Law School.
