In the context of North Asia, where the likes of Japan, Korea and Taiwan have enjoyed such economic success, China has a unique distinction. It is the only country not to have benefited from large infusions of foreign aid from the West.
While most of North Asia at least, those countries which were not battlegrounds benefited economically from the Cold War between the West and the former Soviet Union, China had to go it alone. However, the country does benefit from vast amounts of foreign direct investment FDI, which last year ran at over $50 billion, making it the biggest of recipient of such funds in the world.
