Barclays Capital builds China team

David Lau is appointed managing director of Barclays Capital's investment banking business in China.

Barclays Capital, the investment banking division of Barclays Bank, has appointed David Lau as managing director for investment banking, China.

He will be based in Hong Kong and will report to Chris Hui, head of investment banking China/Hong Kong.

Lau will act as the main coverage banker for corporations in China, focusing on telecoms, media and technology as well as general industrials. He will work alongside David Zhang and Baomin Li, who are both managing directors in the same China investment banking department, as a senior client coverage team head responsible for originating business opportunities.

Lau's most recent banking job was at Citi where he spent 10 years. The last two of those years he was a managing director within telecoms, media and technology with an emphasis on equities and mergers and acquisitions.

Barclays Capital says this appointment further highlights the expansion of its Asian investment banking business and follows last month's hiring of Steven Sun and January's hiring of financial institutions group bankers in Japan.

"Our client-focused strategy and product delivery platform have enabled Barclays Capital to build a strong franchise in the region over the past several years, and the addition of David's extensive experience should accelerate the growth of our business in China," says Hui.
