The Citi Handicap Stakes: betting on a new CEO

An English bookie quotes odds on the stallions and geldings in the running for CitiÆs top job.
Subprime may have seemed like a gamble, but if you really want a sporting investment, put down your money on who will snaffle the top job at Citi.

British bookmakers Paddy Power, best known for horse racing and football betting, also offer a range of ænovelty betsÆ. As well as offering odds on how Coronation Street soap star Vera Duckworth will die, it also has odds on who will be the next permanent CEO at Citi.

Pick of the paddock is ex-Goldman-ite John Thain, favourite at 5-4, followed by Vikram Pandit at 2-1. If you believe in following a thoroughbred with a good name, the aristocratically titled Sir Win Bischoff is priced at an attractive 12-1. Sir Win is also the stand-in CEO alongside the new chairman Robert Rubin.

Among the dark horses, or æragsÆ in horse racing parlance, are Stan OÆNeal, ex-Merrill Lynch boss at 50-1. While the rank outsider is Bank of England governor Mervyn King at 80-1.

JPMorgan Chase boss, Jamie Dimon, who has been impressing observers with his early morning gallops is not even quoted, but looks an interesting bet. CitiÆs biggest individual shareholder Saudi Prince Alwaleed Bin Talal says he would like to see retired chairman and CEO Sandy Weill return.

If any managing directors at Citi in Hong Kong want to bet on themselves, the bookmaker will quote them odds.
