Goldman Sachs on Thursday named David Adelman as head of government affairs for Asia Pacific.
Adelman is responsible for overseeing Goldman Sachs’ public policy agenda in Asia Pacific as well as managing the firm’s relationship with key regulators and policymakers in the region.
He joins the firm as a managing director and will be based in Singapore before relocating to Hong Kong next year.
Adelman served as the US ambassador to Singapore from 2010 until August 2013. During his term as ambassador, the two countries launched the US-Singapore Strategic Partnership Dialogue, established a program to address health, educational and environmental issues in South East Asia and signed agreements covering education, water resources and combating serious crimes.
Also during his tenure, the US and Singapore jointly agreed for the first time to the forward deployment of US Navy vessels to Singapore.
Adelman also led eight regional trade missions, including the first American business delegation to Myanmar in 2012. He is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations.
Prior to his appointment as ambassador, Adelman was a partner in the American law firm Sutherland Asbill and Brennan and served in the Georgia State Senate. He taught in the Honors Program at the University of Georgia where he earned his bachelor’s degree. He received his law degree from Emory University and his master’s degree from Georgia State University.
