Jason Johnson joins Citi as natural resources head

Citi hires Jason Johnson to head its Asia-Pacific natural resources business.

Citi has hired Jason Johnson to head the firm's natural resources global banking coverage in Asia, underlining what it says is Citi's continued investment in its Asia-Pacific global banking franchise.

Johnson joins as a managing director from Credit Suisse where he has 14 years banking experience as an industry specialist in natural resources, including focusing on oil and gas, metals and mining, power and chemicals clients. He will continue to be based in Hong Kong.

"This important hire underlines our commitment to our clients to invest in our franchise. We look forward to Jason leading the team forward as we continue to deliver innovative solutions to our clients in the natural resources space," said Farhan Faruqui, head of global banking for Asia-Pacific, in a press release.

So far this year, Citi has advised on natural resources M&A transactions including Noble Group's acquisition of Gloucester Coal and advising Reliance Petroleum on its integration with Reliance Industries. Citi has also helped Asian natural resources clients raise close to $9 billion year-to-date from the capital markets, according to Dealogic data, including equity offerings for Santos, Tata Steel and Real Gold and debt offerings for BHP Billiton and Posco.

The firm said an important part of Johnson's immediate responsibilities will be to further build out this capability. The firm said in a press release that further hires to the team will be announced in due course.
