State Street names Tim Helyar as Apac head

Helyar has relocated to Hong Kong from Sydney to succeed Lochiel Crafter.

State Street has appointed Tim Helyar as head of Asia Pacific (Apac).

Helyar, who started in the role this week, has relocated to Hong Kong from Sydney -- where he was head of Australia at the global bank, according to a company announcement.

The banking executive has been tasked with overseeing State Street’s Apac business strategy, partnering with country, functional and business leaders to strengthen governance, deepen client and regulator engagement and accelerate regional growth. Helyar succeeds Lochiel Crafter, who has recently retired, and will report to Stefan Gmuer, State Street’s head of international.

Helyar has more than 25 years of financial services experience across investment services, pension, investment and wealth management. He joined State Street in 2021 and before leading Australia, he was Apac head of fund services product development at JP Morgan.

“Tim is a proven leader with deep investment services expertise and a strong track record of delivering for clients,” said Gmuer in a statement, adding: “His regional knowledge and collaborative leadership will help advance our growth strategy across Apac, while supporting regional clients as they seek to unlock growth, gain efficiencies and seize new opportunities.”

“I’m excited to lead State Street’s Apac business at such an important time for our clients and the region,” said Helyar. “Apac is one of the world’s fastest-growing regions for institutional investment, and I look forward to working with our teams to support clients’ growth and transformation ambitions.”

State Street has offices in Australia, Japan, China, Hong Kong, Singapore, Korea, Taiwan, Malaysia, Thailand, Brunei, the Philippines, and India. The bank has had a presence in Apac since 1982
