BarCap hires Asia-Pacific electronic sales trading head

Jan Shun Yet has joined alongside other sales trading hires, as buy-side demand grows for combining e-trading services with traditional advice and execution.‪

To cap a major hiring push in equity sales trading, Barclays Capital welcomed Jan Shun Yet on board last week as Asia-Pacific head of electronic sales trading.

He previously held a similar post at Bank of America Merrill Lynch (BoA Merrill), where he had been since 2005, before which he worked as a portfolio trader at Morgan Stanley in New York.

‪Meanwhile, Michael Garcia, Orion Leung and Jamie White all joined in August in Hong Kong as additions to the sales/equity trading team, and were also previously with BoA Merrill.‪

The hires are part of a strategy to have traditional sales traders more closely involved with the high-touch e-trading business, says Michael Kim, Asia-Pacific head of electronic equities product management at Barclays Capital.

He says there is increasing demand from the buy side for a combination of sophisticated e-trading services -- such as real-trade analytics and algorithm monitoring -- with advice on trading ideas and execution provided by sales traders.

Kim is based in Tokyo, where he is building the bank’s e-trading capacity, and he will move to Hong Kong to continue the rollout there, as he told AsianInvestor last month.

The new appointments follow related senior equities hires earlier this year in Hong Kong. They include: Lehman Brothers and Nomura veteran Sigurbjörn ‘Siggi’ Thorkelsson, head of equities for Asia-Pacific; Jeremy Norris, head of sales trading for non-Japan Asia; and Mark Sandeford, head of cash equities trading for non-Japan Asia, including Australia.‪
