ABNÆs Kirkby goes global; Galloway returns

Big changes at the top of ABN AMROÆs investment banking division.
One old Asia hand leaves, and another returns. That is currently the case at ABN AMRO, where the Dutch firmÆs head of M&A and equity capital markets, Matthew Kirkby is departing Asia for London.

Kirkby, who has been in Asia for over a decade, is returning to the UK to take on a global role, running ABNÆs financial sponsors business. Given this is one of the fastest growing segments of the investment banking business, this will offer the Englishman a major new challenge û bringing together his experience in financings and corporate finance. While in Asia, he worked with clients that included LG Philips, SK Telecom, Hon Hai, Compal, Maxis, and Bharti Televentures.

He will be replaced by another Asia veteran, Neil Galloway. The Scot, who spent 10 years with HSBC before joining ABN, has over 16 years of investment banking experience, and has likewise spent a decade in Asia. For the past two years he has been based in London running ABNÆs telecoms media and tech group for Europe, Africa and the Middle East.

Galloway, who is a managing director, has worked with clients that include Maxis, M1, Bhart, PLDT, Hutchison Telecom and STT, as well as Weather Group (which incorporates Wind and Orascom). Over the past 18 months he has been responsible for building new client relationships in the Middle East.

KirkbyÆs new global role will meanwhile see him in Asia often, since the financial sponsor business in the region continues to boom, especially in Australia.
