Nomura hires pair to boost client relationships

Japanese investment bank makes new appointments for prime finance and equity sales trading teams.

Nomura has hired two client-facing employees in Asia-Pacific as the Japanese investment bank moves to strengthen relationships with clients.

Dan McNicholas has been named head of capital introductions in Asia-Pacific. He joins from asset manager State Street Global Advisors, where he spent the last five year as head of alternatives for Asia Pacific.

Before that, he spent four years with Bank of America Merrill Lynch as head of prime sales, consulting and capital introductions in Asia.

McNicholas is joining Nomura’s prime finance team, according to an internal memo seen by FinanceAsia. His role will be to help create greater connectivity between Nomura’s global investors and prime finance clients, as well as developing its hedge fund client franchise, according to the memo.

He will report to Chris Antonelli, Nomura’s global head of prime finance.

Separately, Nomura has hired sales trading veteran Sean McDonough as a member of its equity sales trading team in Hong Kong. McDonough joins from Bank of America Merrill Lynch, where he was most recently a managing director in the Tokyo office.

McDonough was CLSA’s head of Japan sales trading for five years before joining Bank of America Merrill Lynch, while he has worked for Goldman Sachs before that.

In his new role, McDonough will be responsible for providing high-touch sales trading services on Japanese equities to Asia ex-Japan institutional clients, according to a separate memo seen by FinanceAsia.

He will report directly to Carter Burns, Nomura’s Japan head of cash sales trading, and locally to Paul Beresford, Asia ex-Japan head of execution services.
