RBS builds Asia corporate advisory team

The bank adds firepower to the ABN AMRO M&A team by poaching four bankers and transferring two, all at director or executive director level.
Royal Bank of Scotland has strengthened its corporate sectors and advisory business in Asia-Pacific by poaching Richard Griffiths, Ivan Li, Tammy Wan and Michael Niederberger, and transferring Peter Schulz and Francois Cohas.

Richard Griffiths, Ivan Li and Tammy Wan join ABN AMROÆs M&A team as corporate executive directors and Michael Niederberger joins the corporate finance group as corporate director. Peter Schulz, who was part of the technology, media and telecommunications sector coverage team in London, has moved to Asia and Francois Cohas, previously with ABN AMROÆs merchant bank unit has also moved internally. Both Schulz and Cohas will be executive directors in the regional M&A team.

All the new hires will be based in Hong Kong and will be part of RBSÆs newly formed corporate sectors and advisory group, which includes M&A as well as corporate finance, corporate financing and risk solutions, along with five sector teams. The combination of all these areas under one platform is intended to enable customers to leverage the bank's sector expertise and cross-border global advisory capabilities, says RBS in a written statement.

Griffiths rejoins ABN AMRO after a year at US boutique M&A firm Houlihan Lokey in Hong Kong where he was director of corporate finance responsible for leading deal origination and execution. In his last stint with ABN AMRO, Griffiths was an executive director in the bankÆs corporate finance team in Hong Kong and London.

Li joins from Lazard where he was a director responsible for Asia origination and execution focusing on cross-border and structured finance transactions. Li was at Merrill Lynch between 2000 and 2006 in the investment banking group, covering the energy and power sectors.

Wan was most recently director in the corporate finance and advisory team at Standard Chartered with a focus on Greater China origination and M&A execution. She has also worked with HSBC and Schroders Asia.

Niederberger rejoins ABN AMRO from JPMorgan Chase in Hong Kong where he worked in the investment banking group. He was with ABN AMRO in the corporate finance team between 2004 and 2006. He has also worked with Goldman Sachs.

ABN AMRO has been expected to announce some reinforcements in the ranks in Asia following Barclays CapitalÆs audacious move of poaching a global team of 60 corporate finance and M&A bankers from the Dutch bank to kick-start the BarCap advisory business. In the region, BarCap poached ABNÆs head of M&A for Asia, Jason Rynbeck, along with an estimated 18 other team members in mid-May.
