Norwest Venture Partners makes India hire

The California-based technology venture capital fund appoints Niren Shah as managing director in India.
Technology venture capital fund Norwest Venture Partners (NVP) has appointed Niren Shah as managing director based in Mumbai.

Shah has 14 years of operational, finance, investment banking and entrepreneurial experience at firms such as eBay and KPMG. His focus will be on investments in the internet, digital media, next-generation services and mobile sectors.

ôNirenÆs domain experience in the consumer internet world and his network of global contacts are great assets,ö says Promod Haque, managing partner of NVP. ôThis is a very exciting time for India, as the country has developed into a world-class technology centre and global investment destination.ö

NVP has already made five direct investments in India, including: knowledge process outsourcing firm, Adventity; digital and mobile entertainment company, Mobile2Win; outsourced software product development firm, Persistent Systems; the social/professional networking hub Sulekha.com, which focuses on non-resident Indians; and online travel agency, Yatra. NVP also has investments in 20 companies headquartered in the US with a significant presence in India.

NVP is a global venture capital firm focused on information technology. It manages more than $2.5 billion from its headquarters in California.

Shah was earlier senior director of strategy and ventures at eBay in California. He was part of the original management team of Baazee.com, IndiaÆs largest shopping website. Shah joined Baazee in 2000 and, after Baazee was sold to eBay, he led integration and platform migration into eBay.

Shah has a masters degree from the University of Mumbai and is a chartered accountant.
