2006 Bordeaux update

Over the past 10 days there has been a trickle of releases from Bordeaux.
Pricing is absolutely key for the 2006s and whilst a few Chateaux have overstepped the mark, with prices not far off the 2005 vintage, we believe the following offer good value.

2006 Ch. du Tertre, Margaux..ú180 a case
Tertre's 2006 is a lovely silky wine. Gently perfumed, with bright yet creamy red fruit and a very elegant palate, the tannins here are so supple that you might almost think you were drinking Burgundy rather than Bordeaux. It is as feminine as ever with a lovely explosion of fruit on the palate. It has a generosity and attractiveness that is not frequently found in 2006. This will make delicious and extremely sophisticated drinking. Drink: 2012-2018.
Berry Bros & Rudd (BBR) Score: 16/20
Jancis Robinson: 17/20

2006 Ch. Moulin St. Georges, St. Emilion..ú210 a case
Owned by Alain Vauthier of Ch. Ausone fame, Moulin St Georges is in its own way just as impressive, displaying all the seductive panache of its elder sibling but with the volume (and price!) turned down. This is gorgeously aromatic with spicy rich black fruit and chocolate truffles on the nose. The palate is luscious and exotic, packed full of blackberries and cream with hints of coffee, dark chocolate and coconut. The Vauthiers have produced another fabulous, great value wine in 2006, and with only 3000 cases or so produced, we recommend you snap one up quick. Drink: 2012-2020.
BBR Score: 16.5/20
Jancis Robinson: 16/20

2006 Ch. Talbot, St Julien..ú240 a case
The last couple of years has seen a real resurgence at this popular Bordeaux estate. Its 2006 is a real vin de plaisir but with enough terroir characteristics to retain its sense of place. It is utterly delicious with voluptuous sweet black fruit, a sleek texture and a cigar box notes. Stylistically its generosity makes it the Pomerol of St Julien; it is not far off the quality of its 2005 either. Drink: 2014-2025.
BBR Score: 16/20
Robert Parker: 89-91/100
Jancis Robinson: 16/20

2006 Ch. Calon Segur, St. Estephe..ú300 a case
Calon very much reflects the vintage in 2006. Rather than trying to make something big and brawny, this is full of finesse and class, and that inimitable austere St EstFphe style. Made with 60% Cabernet Sauvignon it is a wine for the long term. Its aromas are all dark fruit and raspberries imbued with minerals, while the palate is refined, with lovely crisp silky fruit and a firm tannic structure. This is another very impressive Calon. Drink: 2016-2030.
BBR Score: 16.5/20
Robert Parker: 90-93/100
Jancis Robinson: 17.5/20

2006 Ch. Lynch Bages, Pauillac..ú372 a case
With the legendary Jean-Michel Cazes having stepped back from running Lynch-Bages, it is his engaging, laid back, very sharp son Jean-Charles who is now in charge. PFre Cazes must be very proud of the first vintage under his watch. This is a remarkable 2006: voluptuous and sexy, its massive tannins are cloaked by the hugely concentrated ripe, cedary, brambly fruit, while the sweet, rich, toasty aromas add an extra je ne sais quoi. The purity of fruit on the finish is sensational too. Certainly we cannot recall Lynch having been so far up the Bordeaux quality ladder in any previous year. This is an essential purchase for any Claret lover. Drink: 2015-2035.
BBR Score:18/20
Robert Parker: 91-93/100
Jancis Robinson: 17/20

We are hoping for some significant new releases over the coming week or
two. Further updates to follow.
