Jefferies expansion

Jefferies continues expansion with Asia securities finance head

The US investment bank hires Sean Huang from UBS in New York to run securities finance in Asia.

Jefferies, a global securities and investment banking firm, has hired Sean Huang from UBS in New York to become head of securities finance trading in Asia. He will be based in the firm’s Hong Kong office and will be responsible for managing securities finance activities in Asia.

“Building out our Asia securities finance business is part of our ongoing strategy to provide a full-service global equity product offering to our clients,” said Mike Alexander, the chief executive of Jefferies Asia. “Our equity platform continues to gain market share as we focus on delivering new products and services to our institutional client base globally.”

Huang has more than nine years of industry experience and joins Jefferies from UBS, where he was a director and senior trader in equity finance. Previously, he was a senior trader in equity finance at Fortis Bank

Jefferies is establishing a full-service equity sales, trading and research capability focused on Asia, including Hong Kong, Japan, Singapore, Korea and Taiwan. As part of this build-out, it recently initiated equity research coverage in Asia, adding more than 45 companies in China and Hong Kong to its global coverage, under the direction of Nilesh Jasani, who joined as head of Asia-Pacific research last year.

In April, the firm hired six new managing directors in Asia, including: Lydia Leung from CICC as head of Hong Kong and China equity sales; Stephen Nichols from Citi as head of Asia trading; Adam Putterill from J.P. Morgan as head of Hong Kong and China sales trading; and James Young from UBS as head of regional sales.

Jefferies’ equities business now consists of more than 700 professionals globally, including more than 200 outside the US.
