Mitchell leaves ADB for White & Case

The general counsel at the ADB will re-enter private practice by concentrating on trade, investment and financing transactions in Tokyo.
White & Case has appointed Arthur Mitchell as senior counsellor with a focus on the Asia region. Mitchell joins the international law firm from the Asian Development Bank, where he has been a general counsel.

Mitchell, who takes up his new role in September, will be based in Tokyo and concentrate on trade, investment and financing transactions in Asia.

ôAs Japan has now emerged from a decade of minimal growth, and Japanese businesses integrate with the global economy, this is ideal timing for a person with the experience and vision of Arthur Mitchell to join our Tokyo team,ö says Robert Grondine, a senior partner of the firm in charge of the Asian mergers and acquisitions practice, in a written statement.

ôArthur will certainly enhance our leading M&A, finance and funds teams in Tokyo and regionally for foreign private equity and strategic investors coming to Japan, and (for) Japanese (investors) venturing outward into new investments,ö says Grondine.

Mitchell has more than 30 years of experience of Asian trade, investment and financing transactions. During his time at the ADB, he gained intimate knowledge of the dynamics of Asian infrastructure and bank finance development. He has also built valuable relationships during his many years of working with governments, as well as international and Japanese financial institutions in the region and globally, according to the release.

Before Mitchell joined the ADB in 2003, he practiced privately at Coudert Brothers and Chadbourne & Parke where he was head of Asian practice groups for many years. While being an advisor on various financial and corporate transactions at the two major Wall Street law firms, he founded and acted as the chief executive officer of a New York-based investment consulting firm, which launched the first hedge fund in Japan.

ôI am very excited at the prospect of re-entering private practice, and thrilled with the Asia and global platform that White & CaseÆs pre-eminent project, infrastructure, bank finance and bank regulatory practices offer,ö says Mitchell.
