Smith & Jessen hires new gun for North Asia

Sanjoy Sanyol joins the derivatives headhunting firm to establish a second Asian outpost in Hong Kong.
Headhunter Smith & Jessen has hired Sanjoy Sanyol to spearhead its new Hong Kong office, which will focus on business across North Asia as a complement to the firm's existing Southeast Asian base in Singapore.

Sanyol joins the firm from Rice & Dore Associates, whose Hong Kong office he established in 2004. During the past three years he has helped the firm build a strong equities, hedge fund and prime brokerage business.

That experience should serve him well for pushing Smith & Jessen's franchise into Hong Kong, China, Taiwan and Korea. The firm has 10 staff in Singapore and specialises in placing traders, sales people and structurers across the areas of fixed income, exotic forex, equities and equity derivatives, asset management and real estate.

"Our formula is simple," says John Jessen, the firm's Singapore-based co-head. "We specialise in terms of product, while also securing a high degree of geographical focus. We do not believe you can cover EMEA properly from London only, nor for that matter all of Asia from a single location like Hong Kong or Tokyo. While our clients expand their footprint, so must we."

Jessen says that he expects the firm to add as much as 40 people during the next two years.
