Commonwealth Bank appoints new head of capital markets

David Hancock returns to his native Sydney after a stint with Shinsei Bank and JPMorgan in Asia.
The Commonwealth Bank of Australia (CBA) has announced that David Hancock has been appointed as head of equities and capital markets reporting to Marten Touw in Sydney. He takes up the post in February.

In his new role, Hancock will run the newly amalgamated institutional equity and debt capital markets businesses for the bank globally. Touw, who is head of global markets and treasury for CBA, says: ôWe want to achieve a leading position in both the Australian equity and debt markets and I believe we have started laying the foundations to get there.ö

Hancock joins from Japanese Shinsei Bank where he spent the last two years as general manager of ECM managing the bankÆs sizeable equity portfolio, its securities company and building and establishing new revenue opportunities in the ECM space. He was also a key plank in the joint venture between Shinsei and Macquarie Bank to develop the listed infrastructure market in Japan.

Before joining Shinsei, Hancock was co-head of institutional equities Asia (including Japan and Australia) for JPMorgan û a business comprising over 650 people in 29 locations globally. His responsibilities also included US distribution, derivatives and markets technology across products.

Prior to relocating to Asia, Hancock was managing director and head of JPMorganÆs equities division in Australia, a role that also encompassed oversight of JPMorganÆs interest in Ord Minnett.

Previously, he held roles at Salomon Smith Barney over a 10-year period.

Touw says: ôDavid comes to us with a long and distinguished career in both equities broking and capital raising for financial institutions both in Australia and overseas. Having worked on deals with David over the years, I have an insight into his ability and am very excited by his decision to join us."
