New and improved Art Taipei

In its 22nd year, Art Taipei will be showcasing emerging Asian artists as well as international superstars.

Art Taipei, which will be held at the Taipei World Trade Centre from October 30 to November 2, is in its 22nd year and set for a major revamp.

The result is an uncensored look at contemporary Asian art in a freewheeling atmosphere that liberates visitors from any pre-conceived notion of what art is, with a lineup of both superstar and up-and-coming artists.

“We have a really strong line-up this year,” Art Taipei executive director Emerson Wang told FinanceAsia.

While local galleries such as Lin&Lin Gallery, Soka Art Center, Tina Keng, and Eslite Gallery will showcase a wide range of Chinese artists, international galleries like Galleria Continua are bringing international artists, including Anthony Gormley, Loris Cecchini, Giovanni Ozzola, Kader Attia and Hans Op de Beeck, meanwhile Galerie Urs Meile is bringing Tobias Rehberger, the 53th International Art Exhibition of la Biennale di Venezia Golden Lion winner.

Highlights of the fair include remarkable classic works by surrealist artists Salvador Dali and Marc Chagall, renowned Chinese artists Zao Wou-Ki and Walasse Ting, and Japan’s Yayoi Kusama.
The 2015 edition of Art Taipei also has a premiere section, displaying works created in the last three years and works that have never been shown in Taiwan, which represent the latest trends in the international art world.

There is a Frontiers section too that is open to galleries presenting art in new genres and innovative multi-media formats, such as digital art, interactive art, sound art and installations, plus a Future segment. Formerly known as Young Artist Discovery, Future will feature solo exhibitions of artists under the age of 35 by galleries outside Taiwan.

For travellers to Taiwan, this fair may help collectors get a headstart on their Christmas shopping.

Elsewhere, the Hong Kong Art Gallery Week takes place November 1-7, with over 50 members from the Hong Kong Art Gallery Association participating. “Hong Kong Art Gallery week aims to explore and reflect on the city’s rapidly developing art scene,” co-president Katie de Tilly said.
