Finding value amid surging Bordeaux prices

An update on the En Primeur 2005 Bordeaux sales by Berry Brothers.
We have seen a week of furious activity in Bordeaux and with the release of such great names as Palmer, Angelus, Cos d'Estournel and Pavie in the last few days, excitement has reached fever pitch.

The 2005 Cos d'Estournel in particular, has released at a price much lower than expected, ú1,140 a case and is selling rapidly

The Chateau released 8,000 cases into the world market, of which Berrys' was fortunate enough to be able to secure a very good allocation. This is one of the finest wines, of the finest vintage ever produced, with scores very similar to the first growths and looks a relative bargain. We anticipate other 1st Growths ( Ch. Latour, Margaux etc..) to be in the region of ú3,000-4,000 a case.

Chateau Cos d'Estournel, 2eme Cru Classe, St EstFphe
It would be hard to find two wines as different in 2005 as Calon STgur and Cos d'Estournel. As firm and tannic as Calon was, so Cos was polished and rich, with a fantastic acidity that will enable it to age majestically. Made with 78% Cabernet Sauvignon, this is a wonderful, dense wine with earthy St EstFphe minerality amidst the incredibly rich fruit. As Director General Jean-Guillaume Prats points out, 2005 was a year of excess with high sugar, high alcohol and high tannins but everything here is in perfect balance. Jean-Guillaume thinks that 2005 might be as good as their legendary 2003 - but we definitely thought it was better. This fantastic wine is the first serious candidate for wine of the vintage.

Drink 2020-2060. BBR Score 19/20

There has been a huge demand for the 2005 wines and in some instances, we have seen an increase on the opening price as stocks sell through.

Earlier in the week our large opening and secondary allocations of Lynch Bages sold out and we are now seeing third release stock at the higher price of ú570 a case ( an increase of almost ú100 on the opening price )
