Jun Ma is joining the People's Bank of China as chief economist in its research bureau after spending 13 years with Deutsche Bank, according to an internal memo at the German bank seen by FinanceAsia.
Ma was Deutsche Bank's chief economist for Greater China and head of China and Hong Kong strategy and was widely known for his bullish outlook on China.
In a ‘Special Report’ on China dated January Ma wrote: “2014 will mark the beginning of a series of growth-enhancing structural reforms and should witness a cyclical economic recovery.”
His report predicted 20% upside in the MSCI China Index in 2014, based on expectations of stronger-than-expected earnings growth, as well as an index re-rating on cyclical growth recovery and the positive impact of reforms.
Prior to joining Deutsche Bank in 2000, Ma worked from 1992 to 2000 as an economist and senior economist at the International Monetary Fund and World Bank.
From 1988 to 1990, Ma was an economic research fellow at the Development Research Center of China's State Council.
Ma holds a Master's from Fudan University in Shanghai and a PhD in Economics from Georgetown University.
Ma has published several hundred articles and six books on the Chinese economy and other economics/financial subjects.
