HSBC names Asia-Pacific resources and energy head

Bardin Davis is promoted to head the resources and energy group for Asia-Pacific, replacing Peter O'Malley, who left the bank in 2011.

HSBC has promoted Bardin Davis to head the resources and energy group for Asia-Pacific, effective immediately, according to an internal memo seen by FinanceAsia.

Davis will continue to hold his current position as head of metals and mining for Asia-Pacific, in addition to the new role. He will report to Matthew Wallace, global head of resources and energy group banking, and Russell Julius, head of banking, Asia Pacific. Davis replaces Peter O'Malley, who left HSBC in 2011.

Bardin joined HSBC in 2012 and was previously at Macquarie Capital where he held a similar position and oversaw the origination and execution of metals and mining deals. Before that, he was with ABN Amro in Australia and Hong Kong.

The heads of the resources and energy group sub-sectors in Asia-Pacific, namely Jorge Martinez,  head of oil and gas for Asia-Pacific; Anne Kao, head of power, utilities and renewables for Greater China; and Robert McGregor, head of power, utilities and renewables for Asia-Pacific ex Greater China; will report locally to Davis and globally to Wallace.

Energy remains a key area for M&A activity out of Asia and HSBC has become more active on the M&A front during the past few years, helped by its ability to provide acquisition finance. It was ranked fifth for completed M&A for Asia ex-Japan last year, according to Dealogic.
