With few tears but a lot of class, Asia's finest financiers gathered on Friday night for the eighth annual FinanceAsia Achievement Awards Gala dinner. The wine flowed freely as old friends and colleagues celebrated the triumphs of 2003. More than 450 guests were in attendance, with people flying in from Indonesia, Malaysia, Korea, Taiwan, Singapore, Australia, the UK and the US to join in the fun.
After dinner, guests were given a fascinating look at the inner workings of British foreign policy towards China'in the 25 years leading up to the handover, in a speech delivered by Lord Michael Heseltine, former Deputy Prime Minister of Great Britain.
Another highlight was the announcement that Laksamana Sukardi, Minister of State Owned Enterprises from the Republic of Indonesia had won the Capital Markets Person of the Year award.
The team from JPMorgan won the table quiz (and the case of champagne that went with it), in a closely fought battle with Goldman Sachs and HSBC. And bankers from ABN AMRO outbid the rest of the field to win the position of global coordinator in the charity tombstone announcement of the evening that will be running in coming issues of FinanceAsia.
In true Oscars style, we would like to thank everyone who made the evening so special, especially our sponsors of the evening, Global Sage.
