Standard Chartered has hired veteran Citi banker Sanjeeb Chaudhuri as regional head for South Asia and chief marketing officer for the consumer bank.

Chaudhuri has already started at Standard Chartered, based in Mumbai, and is directly responsible for the consumer banking operations in India and the heads of consumer banking in Bangladesh, Nepal and Sri Lanka report to him. As CMO, senior consumer banking marketing staff, who are largely based in Singapore, will also report to him.

Vishu Ramachandran, the previous South Asia head, has relinquished responsibility for the region to Chaudhuri, but continues to be in charge of the Middle East, Pakistan and Africa. Chaudhuri takes over the CMO role from James Galloway, who has been promoted to global head of preferred and personal banking.

At Citi, Chaudhuri was most recently chief executive officer for retail and commercial banking for Central and Eastern Europe, the Middle East and Africa, as well as head of retail banking and CMO for Europe, the Middle East and Africa. He joined Citi in the credit cards business in India.

“Sanjeeb’s track record of achieving and hands-on approach is exactly what we need to take our consumer banking transformation to the next level in South Asia and drive our brand recognition to greater heights globally,” said Steve Bertamini, consumer banking CEO and group executive director for Standard Chartered in a written statement commenting on the hire.

Bertamini added that the new appointment reflected the growing importance of South Asia to Standard Chartered’s consumer banking business and that the new stand alone South Asia regional role would enable increased management focus on the region.
