Barclays Capital hires Helge Weiner-Trapness and Randy Gelber

Helge Weiner-Trapness will replace Steven Sun as head of the financial institutions group at Barclays Capital, while Randy Gelber will head technology.

Barclays Capital has hired Helge Weiner-Trapness as head of its financial institutions group (FIG) for Asia-Pacific and elevated existing head, Steven Sun, to the position of chairman. The British bank has also appointed Randy Gelber as head of technology for investment banking.

Weiner-Trapness will be responsible for managing delivery to FIG clients, including banks and other financial services companies. He joins from Asia Pacific Land, where he was group managing director and chief operating officer. Over the past two decades Weiner-Trapness has also worked at J.P. Morgan, including a stint as head of FIG, and at Goldman Sachs.

Sun joined Barclays Capital in February last year from UBS, bringing 15 years of experience in investment banking, most recently as head of FIG at the Swiss bank. In his new role as chairman of FIG at Barclays Capital, Sun is expected to “continue to build the firm's FIG franchise in a senior role, providing advice to both his existing client base as well as other high priority FIG clients”, said Barclays Capital in a written statement.

As head of technology within investment banking in Asia-Pacific, Gelber will be responsible for expanding the firm's technology business in the region. He has more than 17 years of advisory and coverage experience in the technology sector, both in New York and Hong Kong, and was most recently with Bank of America Merrill Lynch, where he headed the Asia technology group. He has also worked in the technology group at Lehman Brothers.

Barclays Capital has been adding senior staff across products and functions in Asia under the leadership of new investment banking head Matthew Ginsburg. Jorge Munoz and Marco Schwartz were recently appointed co-heads of equity capital markets and in June the investment bank poached Ed King from Morgan Stanley to head M&A.
