The FinanceAsia event attracted 14 speakers and 285 delegates to the Makati Shangri-La, the Philippines. This was the third annual event to focus exclusively on corporate treasury, capital management, and trade finance in the Philippines.
The one-day event featured a keynote address by Cesar Purisima, secretary of finance, Government of the Philippines, and Amando Tetango, Jr., governor, Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas. Opening the summit were Aurelio Luis Montinola III, president of the Bank of the Philippine Islands (BPI), and two representatives from Citi: Mylene Arnaldo Caparas, country head, global transaction service, and Ravi Saxena, global transaction head.
Accompanying Francisco Roque A Lumbres, partner, SGV & Co., were Sherisa Nuesa, managing director, Ayala Corporation; Joel Consing, vice president and treasurer, International Container Terminal Services Inc. (ICTSI), and Kenneth S. Uy, president and chief executive officer, BPO International.
The keynote addresses by Amando Tetangco and Cesar Purisima were widely covered by attending media, including FinanceAsia, Bloomberg,Dow Jones, Manila Bulletin, Philippine Star, Philippine Daily Inquirer, Reuters, The Manila Times, Business World, TV5, ABS-CBN,and Manila Standard Today.
In light of the recent market instability, Amando Tetangco expressed how the BSP is revising reporting requirements for banks and financial services institutions, a move aimed at tightening speculative activity and market conduct. Aurelio Montinola corroborated the BSP’s statement, saying banks will assist in the financing of legitimate flows, in order to encourage long-term market stability.
Given the latest volatility witnessed in the global stock markets, it was no surprise that delegates voted Anthony Paner’s presentation on hedging derivatives as a tool to combat currency risk as the most interesting - it scored highest on delegates' evaluation reports. Running a close second on the scoreboard was the panel on how trade finance can be used for economic growth, That session, moderated by Jonathan Barlow of FinanceAsia, brought together Mylene Caparas and Ravi Saxena from Citi.
