White & Case builds Singapore partner base

The law firm appoints three new partners to focus on bank finance and restructuring, and the energy and project finance sectors in Southeast Asia.
White & Case has appointed three new partners -- Chen Guan Feng, Brad Roach and Thong Huey Yann -- who will be based in the firm's Singapore office.

The firm says the promotions in Singapore reflect the continued growth and strength of its Asian banking and finance and projects practice groups, and the importance of Singapore as a hub, not solely with respect to Southeast Asia but indeed Asia generally. The three new partners have extensive pan-Asian experience and have recently advised on transactions in Indonesia, China, India, Thailand, Singapore and elsewhere across the region.

ôWe are delighted to be joined by Brad, Guan Feng and Huey Yann as partners,ö says Barrye Wall, the executive partner of White & CaseÆs Singapore office. ôEach of them has already made an immense contribution to the success of our office and their appointment significantly expands our capabilities in the bank finance and restructuring, and energy and project finance sectors in Southeast Asia.ö

Chen has been advising on cross-border mergers and acquisitions financing transactions and private corporate debt restructurings in Asia and Europe for more than 10 years. Among the many deals he has advised on this year, Guan Feng led the team representing Credit Suisse, Deutsche Bank and JPMorgan Securities (Asia-Pacific) as joint mandated lead arrangers of the $600 million credit facility provided by a syndicate of lenders to MMI International, a Labuan company formed by Kohlberg Kravis Roberts funds and certain management to take private MMI Holdings, a Singapore publicly listed company. This was FinanceAsiaÆs Leveraged Financing Deal of the Year in 2007 and is one of the largest public to private leveraged buyouts in Singapore to date.

Roach advises clients in the oil and gas and energy sectors, with a principal focus on LNG projects. He has extensive experience advising in connection with the upstream and downstream sectors of the petroleum industry throughout Asia and the Middle East. He also advises clients in connection with acquisitions, divestitures, and the financing and development of major energy and infrastructure projects in Asia, and has worked in Asia for over 14 years. He has represented clients in connection with the development and financing of the Tangguh LNG Project in Indonesia, and is currently representing PT Medco Energi Internasional Tbk, IndonesiaÆs largest listed energy and power company, in connection with the development of the Donggi-Senoro LNG Project, in Sulawesi, Indonesia.

Thong has more than 13 years of practice experience in banking and finance. Her practice includes structured finance, project finance, acquisition finance and other cross-border financial transactions in the Asian jurisdictions. She also has significant experience in private corporate debt restructuring in the region, having been actively involved in various major corporate debt restructurings, including in Indonesia, Thailand, China and India.
