From majors to minors

This year is proving that global economies have never really bounced back to roaring success since the Lehman crisis. We’ve had fits and starts of improvements, but one hurdle after another, from natural disasters last year to ongoing uncertainties this year in Europe have resulted in a prolonged slow recovery. This has prompted many to question whether what they do is worth the stress. In January we asked readers to think about that with our cover story: What is success?

This month, we cast a spotlight on a boom industry: Mining. Asia leads the way in recognising the potential to strike it rich. Thanks to China’s voracious appetite for resources, you would have to be living under a rock not to think to look under rocks for opportunities. Not surprisingly, bankers who have had their finger on the pulse have been leading the way. We profile four who left the financial industry to dig up success. But if you think it’s easy to locate all that glitters and call it gold, you best read this story now.

Elsewhere in the magazine, we look at how Malaysia has competition from Indonesia to dominate the palm oil industry, and what it needs to do to retain its leadership position. We also update readers on Thailand’s economy a year after the floods.

For outlooks on capital markets and the macro economy, we turn to Goldman Sachs’s co-heads for the investment bank in Asia-Pacific, and HSBC’s group chief executive Stuart Gulliver.
