Goldman Sachs adds an economist in Korea

Goohoon Kwon becomes Goldman's first Seoul-based Korea economist.
Goldman Sachs announced the appointment of Goohoon Kwon as its Seoul-based Korea economist. It's the first time the firm has had an economist based in Seoul, and therefore symbolises Goldman Sachs's expansion in the region.

Kwon has a diverse background. Prior to joining Goldmans, he worked at the International Monetary Fund where most recently he led teams working on a number of countries in the Caribbean. He was also previously a resident representative in Russia from 2001 to 2004. From 1998 to 2001, Kwon was a senior economist/strategist with ABN AMRO in London. He has also worked with the Harvard Institute for International Development. He is a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA), and has a PhD in economics from Harvard University.

In March, Goldman Sachs appointed Steve Park as a managing director and country head of its securities division in Korea, which was also a part of its efforts to expand and strengthen its business in the country.

Originally opened as a representative office in 1993, Goldman SachsÆs Seoul operation became a branch office in November 1998. In June 2006, the US investment bank was granted a local banking license which allows it to provide a greater variety of financial services and products, including foreign exchange and interest rate and related products to its Korean and international clients through Goldman Sachs International Bank.
