JP Morgan names APAC investment banking co-head

Paul Uren, JP Morgan's chief executive in Australia and New Zealand, joins Murli Maiya as co-head of investment banking for the broader region.

Paul Uren has been appointed JP Morgan's co-head of investment banking coverage for the Asia-Pacific region, according to a Wednesday memo seen by FinanceAsia.

Uren, up until now chief executive of JP Morgan Australia and New Zealand, will relocate to Hong Kong in the coming months to work alongside fellow co-head Murli Maiya. Both will report to Filippo Gori, JP Morgan’s head of banking and deputy CEO in the Asia Pacific region.

Uren joined JP Morgan in 2015 to help global investment banking in Australia and New Zealand and was appointed a senior country officer in 2017.

“In his investment banking capacity, he has worked with the team to drive the growth of JP Morgan’s franchise in Australia and New Zealand, which ranked in the top 3 for the past two years," Gori said in the statement. “His focus on client coverage has further enhanced our position as a trusted advisor and seen JP Morgan involved with several marquee transactions in Australia.”

JP Morgan’s market share in Australia and New Zealand M&A improved to 19% from January to September last year, up from 13.3% in 2017, according to Bloomberg.

Uren was with Citi's investment banking business from 1996 to 2004 and then with Goldman Sachs from 2004 to 2015.

Uren’s successor as Australia and New Zealand regional head is to be named by JP Morgan in due course.

Last month, JP Morgan also announced that it planned to continue growing its commercial banking operations in Asia to complement its strong global footprint in corporate and investment banking.
