Nomura lures BAML veteran to head ECM syndicate

The Japanese broker poaches Anshul Trivedi to replace the recently departed Ortwin Gierhake.

Nomura has hired Anshul Trivedi from Bank of America Merrill Lynch to head the bank’s equity syndicate desk for the Asia ex-Japan region, according to an internal memo seen by FinanceAsia on Monday.

The new hire fills the vacancy created when Ortwin Gierhake decided to leave the largest Japanese broker last month after a 10-year stint with the bank.

Trivedi comes with more than 15 years of investment banking experience. At BAML, he was most recently a director at the global markets division. Prior to that, he worked for BNP Paribas and B&K Securities, a local Indian brokerage firm.

Trivedi is based in Hong Kong and reports to Marshall Nicholson, Nomura’s head of ECM for Asia ex-Japan.

“We are confident he will bring his relationships and ECM strategic experience to help drive the business forward in the coming years,” according to the memo sent from Kenji Teshima, head of investment banking for Asia ex-Japan, and John Goff, head of client financing and solutions for Asia ex-Japan and Nicholson.

Trivedi will work closely with Hong Kong-based syndicate bankers Charles Liu and Kosuke Matsumoto, as well as the regional origination team.

According to data complied by Dealogic, Nomura underwrote $1.34 billion worth of ECM deals, such as IPOs and follow-on transactions, for Asia ex-Japan clients last year.
