HSBC research hires

HSBC continues to build equity research in Hong Kong

The new appointments, including Thomas Hilboldt from Samsung Securities, come as the global bank continues to strengthen its research coverage in the region.

HSBC has hired two more research analysts from Samsung Securities. Thomas Hilboldt joins as regional head of oil, gas and petrochemical research, Asia-Pacific, the bank said in a statement yesterday. Hilboldt has spent a large part of his more than 20-year financial career in energy research.

Tingting Si comes on board as an oil, gas and petrochemicals analyst. Before moving to Samsung, Si started her career as a journalist at China Daily, writing about macroeconomics and energy markets in China.

The appointments follow HSBC’s move in March, when it hired three analysts from the Korean brokerage, including industry veteran Simon Francis, to expand its metals and mining research team as it seeks to develop its research coverage across high-growth sectors.

The series of hires comes after Samsung Securities’ decision earlier this year to shut down almost all of its investment banking and brokerage operations outside Korea, putting a stop to an aggressive expansion that had aimed to create a leading regional player in Asia.

HSBC also said yesterday that it has hired Jenny Cosgrove as the regional head of utilities and alternative energy research, Asia-Pacific. She comes from RBS where she also worked as the head of utilities and alternative energy research, Asia. She has more than 15 years of experience researching this sector in the region.

Other hires include Chris Zee, who has joined the global bank as a consumer and retail analyst, Asia-Pacific, from BNP Paribas. Chi Tsang has joined as a telecoms, media and internet analyst, Asia-Pacific, from Lombard Odier, where he specialised in Greater China.

“These hires in key sectors, along with our hires earlier on in the year further enhance our Asia equity research franchise, and demonstrate our ongoing commitment to HSBC’s equity business,” David May, head of equity research, Asia-Pacific, said in the statement.

All five analysts are based in Hong Kong and started their new roles at HSBC in May, except for Zee and Tsang, who started in April, a spokesman said yesterday.
